Review :
A hopeless and frustrating generation in a developing country far from the motherland
This is a movie about 90% of Koreans living in Argentina.
In a very personal aspect, it showed me why I was never part of that 90% and why I could never be...and why I don't mind. Yet I found it very interesting considering I am a Korean national who grew up in this Latinamerican country as well.
I believe this is actually the first film about Koreans living abroad -so called "1.5 generation"- therefore, it's no wonder it arises some kind of moral obligation to see it.
This film portraits a hopeless and frustrating generation in a developing country halfway around the world, far from the motherland, where the feeling of detachment and rootlessness is way too strong, all this in the context of a not too promising future in the southernmost country on earth.
The story -or stories- were sad since they were totally based on true stories. The music was good, which reminded me of Moulin Rouge in the sense that the lyrics of popular songs perfectly described certain situations, except that in this case there were songs written by Drunken Tiger or DJ Doc.
Through this movie the world gets to learn that in a far-off land called Argentina there is actually a Korean community, and I believe this film is quite accurate when describing it.
I had the pleasure of meeting the director at the Buenos Aires Independent Film Festival and after having seen "Do U cry 4 me Argentina?" -his first film-, I expect more and more interesting films from him.
